Stammering vs Stuttering: Is There Any Difference?

Back to Articles

Short answer: no. Stammering and stuttering describe the same speech difference. The word you hear depends mostly on where you live.

Why two words?

  • Stammering is the everyday word in India, the UK, Australia and much of the Commonwealth.
  • Stuttering is the everyday word in the United States and in most medical papers written in the US.

Both describe speech that is interrupted by repeated sounds (“b-b-b-ball”), stretched sounds (“sssssun”), or silent blocks where a word will not come out.

What it looks like

People who stammer may: – repeat a sound, syllable or word – prolong a sound – get stuck with no sound at all (a “block”) – tense their face, jaw or breathing while trying to speak – avoid certain words, or avoid speaking situations altogether

The avoiding part matters. Many people who stammer become very good at hiding it, so the stammer can be far bigger inside than it looks from outside.

Is it caused by nervousness?

No. Nervousness does not cause stammering. Stammering is understood to involve how the brain plans and coordinates speech, and it often runs in families. Stress, tiredness and pressure can make it feel worse on a given day, which is why it can seem to come and go.

Is it the same for everyone?

No. Two people can both stammer and have very different experiences. It can vary by day, by situation (phone calls and introductions are often harder) and over a lifetime. Some children stop stammering as they grow; some carry it into adulthood.

What helps?

There is no single trick that works for everybody, and anyone who promises an instant guaranteed fix should be treated with caution. What many people find useful: – understanding how their own stammer works – learning breathing and pacing techniques and practising them regularly – practising real speaking situations in a safe group – reducing the fear and avoidance around speaking

At Heal Stammering in Bhopal we teach these skills in structured courses for people aged 12 and above, both in person and online.

Where to start

If you want to talk it through, message us on WhatsApp or read our article on the causes of stammering.

This article is general information, not medical advice. If you are worried about a child under 12, speak to a paediatric speech-language pathologist.
